Taperstick - Wavy Square Base - London 1740 by James Gould - 11cm high; 130g - OJ/7478
Like many silversmiths in the 18th century, James Gould was a specialist and his expertise was candlesticks. This cast silver taper stick was made by him and other than in dimensions is identical to the candlesticks that were fashionable during the reign of George II. It has a wavy-edged, square profile base with knopped stem and bears an original engraved crest to the sunken well in the base. It has a full set of hallmarks to the underside.
Tapersticks were essential pieces of desk equipage during the Georgian period and were used for melting the wax to seal letters and documents.
