Marrow Spoon, 1737

This is a very good example of a Georgian silver marrow scoop combined with a table spoon bowl. During the mid-18th century, marrow bone aficionados would chose between the earlier double-ended scoop type and the spoon/scoop combination. It may be that during this period it was fashionable for marrow fat to be eaten in conjunction with soup or broth and hence the table spoon, meaning only one utensil was required. Later in the century, fashions reverted back to the double ended scoop style.

This spoon has added interest in bearing an original engraved betrothal triangle to the back of the narrow scoop "W" over "IM". The spoon had a double drop heel to the reverse of the bowl and is in fine condition with good hallmarks - although part of the IK maker's mark is worn, but the goose surmount to the letters gives it away as Grimwade reference 1442 for Jeremiah King.
