1.5 pint Mug - London 1775 by John Scofield - 125mm diameter at base; 142mm high; 612 grams - Ref. No.: JO/1622

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is a very rare example of a 1 & 1/2 pint ale mug. Most mugs are one pint or less, and most quart sized vessels are the more expensive tankards (i.e. with hinged cover) - this treads the line between on both size and price. This large mug is a most handsome piece with a scroll and shell capped handle and straight sided body. It has no engravings to the body and appears to be free from erasures too with a good all over patina. There is an interesting presentation inscription discreetly engraved to the handle which is contemporary to manufacture: it reads "C" over "JM" to "A*S". The "C/JM" style is typical of a mid-18thC betrothal triangle and indicates a married couple with a surname beginning with C.

The mug was made by one of the best hollowware makers of the period and is in fantastic condition. One to show off with when having a drink of beer!
