Football Trophy Cup - Birmingham 1889 by Frederick Elkington - 27.6cm high; 15cm diameter; 25.3cm wide across handles; 1200g - BS/9037

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is a superb quality silver trophy with the rare addition of a cast plaque showing an early game of football. The plaque is well detailed with players chasing the ball in typical Victorian fashion - some are even wearing caps! In the background there appears to be a crowd with two well dressed gentleman that are presumably game officials wearing hats (one has a walking stick!). This is a charming scene that dates from the early days of football - the FA Cup was first played for in 1872.

The cup itself is well made and has a really hefty weight of almost 40 tr.oz. The lower half of the body and the pedestal foot are chased with acanthus leaves and this decoration is repeated along the handles and both handle junctions are superbly decorated with leaves. The cup is clearly hallmarked for one of the most important makers of the period - Elkington & Company and is in exellent condition throughout. A fabulous piece of silver relating to football history.
