'Flowers of the Union' Covered Antique Silver Bowl, 1831
Sold
Covered Bowl - Flowers of the Union - London 1831 by John Edward Terrey - 14cm diameter; 15.5cm high; 486g - HZ/5685
This is a fabulous quality antique silver bowl complete with cover adorned with the roses, thistles and shamrocks.
The flowers are symbolic of the United Kingdom and the bowl was most likely made to celebrate the coronation of King William IV in September 1831. The rose represents England, the thistle for Scotland and the shamrock for Ireland. The original pull-off cover is still present and in addition to being chased along the flutes, has a beautifully modelled finial made up from these three Flowers of the Union.
Made by the premier silversmith John Edward Terrey (IET maker's mark), this good-sized bowl retains its original gilt interior and the chased decoration remains crisp throughout. The cartouche is engraved with an original script monogram. The condition is superb and there are complementing hallmarks to the main bowl (part-rubbed) and inside the cover.
