Escutcheon shaped wine labels come in two basic forms - plain or chased and this is an excellent example of the latter. The chasing takes the form of grape and vine tendrils and has "Madeira" block engraved to the centre. The reverse side of this Georgian label bears a clear "JS" mark for the specialist maker, James Slater and dates the label to the 1740's.
