Engrave Decorated Silver Mote Spoon, c.1745
£188.00
Mote Spoon - Engraved & Pierced Bowl - London circa 1745 - 13.6cm long; 10g - MQ/6374a
This is a lovely-looking Georgian silver mote spoon with the pierced bowl enhanced to the back with engravings.
The pierced bowl of a mote spoon allowed the user to clear the surface of tea of the dust specks that originated from the wooden chests used to transport dry tea at the time. The extra decoration on this example adds to the overall quality and lifts it above most contemporary mote spoons. In typical fashion, the stem is long and tapering with a diamond-pointed finial to enable the user to unblock the spout of the teapot
The spoon is struck twice with a maker's mark which due the narrowness of the stem is not clear to read, however appears to be a script letter that helps date the spoon to post-1739 when new sets of maker marks were introduced and script lettering became more commonplace. The style of piercing with crosslets and scrolls and the highlighting by engraving are typical of the 1740's and so place this spoon to the reign of King George II.
This Georgian silver mote spoon is in excellent condition.
