30 piece crested Fiddle Pattern Canteen, York 1842/43 by Barber & North

The Service

We are pleased to be offering a very rare opportunity to purchase a Victorian period silver 30 piece straight canteen made and hallmarked in York. This fiddle pattern service provides for five pieces per 6 place settings.

Each piece bears the same engraved crest above a script monogram (teaspoons have crest only). The crest is on the front terminal of the spoons and reverse side of the forks (n.b. forks used to be laid with prongs pointing towards the table). Each piece is in excellent crisp condition.

The service was hand wrought by the most important silversmithing company in York, James Barber & William North in 1842/43. The teaspoons are marked for York 1850 by James Barber.

 Fiddle Pattern

Fiddle Pattern was the dominant flatware pattern of 19th Century Britain. It was by far the most popular pattern from 1810 until 1880. Production was largely discontinued in 1914, as the original dies for hand wrought fiddle pattern were destroyed during the First World War. As the pattern has rarely been made since, the design is distinctively 19th Century and is extremely popular today for people wishing to have antique cutlery.
