Trinket Box - Rectangular with Comedy & Tragedy Masks and Red Cabochon Stone - London 1909 by Omar Ramsden & Alwyn Carr - 9.5cm wide x 8.3cm deep x 6.5cm high; 190 grams (gross weight) - Ref: GF/4557
This unusual Edwardian silver trinket box features four Comedy and Tragedy masks to the top cover with a diamond-shaped red stone finial to the centre.
Comedy and Tragedy masks represent the opposing themes of theatre and song. They originate from the Greek muses Thalia (smiling face representing "comedy") and Melpomene (sad face representing "tragedy").
The rectangular trinket box stands on four scroll feet and has an all over spot-hammered decoration in typical arts & crafts style. The inside is lined with wood and the hinged cover is gilt. The London hallmarks to the exterior has a rubbed maker's marks, but the Latin legend around three sides of the base declares "Omar Ramsden Et Alwyn Carr Me Fecerunt".
This attractive silver jewellery box is in excellent condition.
