Rattle - Coral, whistle & bells - Birmingham 1924 by ES Barnsley - 135mm long - Ref. No.: BJ/7383
A good example of an early 20th century coral & bells rattle. This rattle has two tiers of bells, a coral teether/handle to one end and a whistle and retainer ring to the other. The bells are all original with the exception of a singleton with is more spherical and latter added (can be seen as uppermost bell in the main photo). The whistle is in working order and the original coral is full length. There is a full set of hallmarks around the collar that holds the coral.
The presence of a coral teether was dual purpose: for soothing aching teeth and for spiritual properties said to ward away evil.
