The Service

We are pleased to be offering a great opportunity to own a straight silver boxed canteen in the very popular Hanoverian Rattail. This service provides for seven pieces per 12 place settings with additional serving and carving items.

All the pieces were made in Sheffield by Walker & Hall. The spoons and forks are all hallmarked silver and the knives and carving set have imitation bone handles.

Each piece benefits from being in excellent polished condition with no personalised engravings. Of the twelve teaspoons, 5 are a little shorter than the others. One dessert knife has a slightly different shaped blade.

Hanoverian Rattail Pattern

Hanoverian Rattail was first in fashion between 1710 and 1730 and has been reproduced since the 1880’s. It was the first flatware pattern in the UK to be used for complete canteens. Due to its elegant lines and proportions it has continued to enjoy great popularity and is probably the most sought after traditional pattern. The front of each piece has a distinctive central ridge, whilst the spoons have the trademark rattail extension to the handle on the reverse side of the bowl.

Presentation

This canteen is presented within its original oak box. The box has two gate legs to the front that prevent drawers slipping out when lifted up. The interior is lined with green baize and each item has its own slot to prevent scuffing whilst in storage. There is a useful space at the back of the bottom drawer for napkins or extra pieces if required – for example we could supply a pair of sauce ladles. The canteen can be locked, but there is no currently no key (easy job for a local locksmith if required).

As with all the canteens available from our web-site, we are happy to send a sample place setting for approval, on receipt of a fully refundable surety payment, prior to purchasing this canteen.
