Boxed 86 piece SILVER HANOVERIAN RATTAIL SILVER CANTEEN CUTLERY,

Sheffield 1971/72 by William Hutton & Sons

The Service

We are pleased to be offering this superb silver canteen of cutlery in Hanoverian Rattail Pattern.  This complete dining service provides for seven pieces per 12 place settings with additional serving spoons.

This service was made in Sheffield with every piece bearing hallmarks for 1971 or 1972. The majority of the service is marked for William Hutton, whilst the knives are marked for James Dixon & Sons and the teaspoons for Cooper Brothers. Presumably the service was assembled by a prudent retailer!  Each piece benefits from being in excellent polished condition with no personalised engravings and the canteen is attractively presented in a wooden box.

This set forms the standard 84 piece service with a pair of table spoons for serving purposes. The silver handled knives in the service are fitted with Sheffield made stainless steel blades.

Hanoverian Rattail Pattern

Hanoverian Rattail was first in fashion between 1710 and 1730 and has been reproduced since the 1880’s. It was the first flatware pattern in the UK to be used for complete canteens. Due to its elegant lines and proportions it has continued to enjoy great popularity and is probably the most sought after traditional pattern. The front of each piece has a distinctive central ridge and there is the diagnostic rattail extension to the handle on the reverse sides.
