Alwyn Carr Silver Thistle Spoon, 1920
Sold
Spoon - Thistle Decorated - London 1920 by Alwyn Carr - 16cm long; 60g - SK/3502
Following the demise of the Ramsden & Carr silversmithing partnership in 1919, the business run by Omar Ramsden thrived with a prolific output over the next two decades. Alwyn Carr may have lacked the business ambition or acumen of his former partner, but his design abilities were second to none and he continued to produce silver on his own account to a much smaller scale than Ramsden - his products are scarce.
This beautiful silver spoon is an early piece from Carr's workshop and has the bonus of a great set of hallmarks including the elusive "AC" maker's mark. The front of the spoon is decorated in relief and includes a thistle motif to the terminal. The spoon betrays its hand-wrought origins with the planishing marks from the hammering processes to the bowl and reverse side. The spoon is in fine condition.
