60 Piece Fiddle Thread & Shell Silver Canteen of Cutlery, Sheffield 1991/95 by United Cutlers
The Service
We are pleased to be offering an excellent boxed silver canteen in the very popular Fiddle, Thread & Shell Pattern. This service provides for the seven pieces per place setting with enough to serve 8 sittings and the addition of 4 serving spoons.
This is a top quality service with each piece having a good hefty weight - the table spoons weigh over 100 grams each! It is also a straight service with all the pieces, except a single table knife, bearing Sterling silver hallmarks for Sheffield 1991 to 1995 by United Cutlers. The silver handled knives are fitted with stainless steel blades. One table knife has had a replacement silver handle which, although in the same pattern, when placed directly next to another has very slight differences (see close up photo). The service is in superb polished condition and benefits from having never been engraved with initials.
Fiddle, Thread & Shell Pattern
Fiddle Pattern, with the handle in the form of a violin neck, was the dominant flatware pattern of 19th Century Britain. It was by far the most popular pattern from 1810 until 1880 and a number of variants were introduced – the premier quality variant, adding both a thread edge and a shell motif to the top of the handle and reverse of the bowl, was called Fiddle, Thread & Shell.

As with all the canteens available from our web-site, we are happy to send a sample place setting for approval, on receipt of a fully refundable surety payment, prior to purchasing this canteen.
