This fantastic early George III coffee jug bears a magnificent engraved coat of arms. The partnership of Daniel Smith & Robert Sharp was one of the leading silversmithing workshops of the period and this jug is typical of their fine output. The coffee jug has a hefty feel in the hand and a beautiful balance. It is is in lovely condition with just some very minor damage to the lower ivory insulator on the handle. The underside is clearly hallmarked and the cover appropriately part marked.

The arms on this jug are those of the Dering family impaling Farnaby and almost certainly commemorate the marriage of Charles Dering and Elizabeth Farnaby in 1770. The Derings were an ancient Kentish family and Charles was the second son of Sir Edward Dering, the 5th Baronet of Surrenden and MP for New Romney. Elizabeth was the daughter of Sir Thomas Farnaby, the 2nd Baronet of Wickam. They lived at Barham Court near Maidstone in Kent. We have further information on the coat-of-arms which will be included with the jug as added interest for the purchaser.
