Card Case - 'York Minster' Castle Top - Birmingham 1844 by Nathaniel Mills - 8.4cm x 6cm; 52g - LD/6320
This is a fabulous example of a Nathaniel Mills castle top card case with a high relief scene of York Minster to the front. The scene remains crisp and the card case is in fine condition. The reverse side shows a profusion of foliage, including vine & grapes and thistle, and centred by a cartouche with initial "C" in Gothic script. Slightly smaller than the standard size, but neverthe less an excellent piece by the master box maker.
York Minster is the seat of the Archbishop of York which after the Archbishop of Canterbury is the second highest office for the Church of England. It is the second largest Gothic style cathedral in Europe and construction began in 1230.
