Spoon - Apostle: St. Peter - West Country circa 1640 (acorn mark) - 19.2cm long; 53g - EE/1719

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This large, Charles I period silver apostle spoon has a great feel in the hand and benefits from being in good order throughout. The spoon is stamped four times with the same acorn device mark - once to the bowl and thrice to the reverse stem. This acorn mark remains unattributed, but probably originates from south west England. The spoon has a great provenance as lot 282 in the How Sale (Woolley & Wallis, October 2007) where it made substantially more than the price we offer it up at! The impressive apostle terminal depicting St, Peter is gilt and the flat nimbus plate bears dot-pricked "EF" over "HT" betrothal initials and the date "1682". The generously sized bowl is in excellent condition with neither wear nor loss of shape.

See Jacksons (pickford Edition) page 521 for further examples of this mark as seen on a slip top spoon of circa 1640.
