Paper Knife - Gilt: Mother & Child - London 1858 by Francis Higgins - 23.3cm long; 83g gross weight - BG/9372

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is a fabulous quality Victorian period silver-gilt paper knife and is typical of the high quality output from the Francis Higgins workshop - one of the most important silversmiths of the period. Both sides of the handle are embossed with a female figure with babe in arms and two other children, there is a further mischievous cherub at the handle terminal and a mask within the Gothic-style architectural decoration towards the blade. The figures and mask are gilt to set them apart from the silver background. The gilt blade is of wide spatula form with a central ridge down the centre and is enhanced with architectural engraving. This is a high quality letter opener in fine condition throughout
