Vinaigrette - Unidentified Castle - Birmingham 1834 by Joseph Willmore - 3.8cm x 2.8cm; 29g - LW/3177</p>

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is an early example from the castle top series of souvenir silver boxes bought by the wealthy on their tours of Great Britain following the advent of the railways. This box has a scene of an unidentified castle atop a cliff with trees to the foreground and background. There are several diagnostic features including two round towers and a series of steps to the right side, plus more buildings behind suggesting a large castle. The scene shows similarities to Warwick Castle, but the central round tower with steps is not a feature of Warwick. Positive identification of the castle will add considerably to the value.

This small box is in good order throughout with an engine turned base and original gilt interior. The grille is delicately pierced and engraved with floral scrolls and the hallmarks are spread in typical Birmingham box style. This is an attractive piece with good investment potential.
