Pepper Pot - 'Trojan Horse' - Chester 1903 by C. Saunders & F. Shepherd - 4.6cm x 5.5cm - SB/5070

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is a most unusual novelty silver pepper pot in the form of a Trojan Horse. The chest of the horse is pierced and the lift off head is corked. The pepper stands on 4 wheels and is clearly marked with Chester hallmarks and a registration design number.

The pepper pot replicates the huge wooden horse built by the Greeks at the siege of Troy during the Trojan Wars. Greek soldiers hid inside the horse and as the rest of the army ran away, the citizens of Troy pulled it into the city as a victory trophy. That night, the Greek soldiers climbed out of the horse and opened the city gates to allow the Greek army to enter the city, defeat the Trojans and thus end the siege.
