Suite of 4 Candlesticks - Hexafoil with foliate scroll and gadroon decoration - London 1768 by John Carter - 310mm high; 3800g weight - Ref. No.: UG/8597
A superb suite of four Georgian candlesticks in a most unusual design. Prior to the 1770's, candlesticks were invariably cast, however with new production methods fresh designs were being invented using sheet silver that previously would have been more difficult to manufacture. This set of candlesticks exemplify those new designs and would have been amongst the first to be made from sheet silver. The interiors are reinforced with loading material (probably resin) and the bases covered in green baize. With their long tall Corinthian columns with acanthus leaf capitals and their acanthus leaf chased six lobed bases, these candlesticks look and feel fantastic. A truly wonderful set of good sized George III candlesticks.
