Sauce Tureens (6) - Regency - London 1816 by John Houle - 200mm long x 120mm wide x 150mm high; 5050 grams combined weight - Ref. No.: MR/2484

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

These are a magnificent suite of 6 fine quality silver sauce tureens dating from the Regency period. These tureens stand on four lion's mask feet and have shell and gadroon mounts and leaf capped handles. Individually they have a hefty weight and as a suite weighs an impressive 162 troy ounces.

These tureens just exude opulence and the highest quality. An indictment of this quality are the engraved coat of arms - not engraved once, but to both sides of each tureen. The covers bear the stork crest of the Crawley family and further information about the coat-of-arms can be found below.

The condition is superb throughout, although whilst applying one of the coat-of-arms the engraver must have been a touch heavy handed and so the inside of one tureen has been reinforced with a small spot of silver solder.

The coat-of-arms belong to Samuel Crawley (1790 - 1852), MP, of Stockwood Park, near Luton in the County of Bedfordshire and his second wife Maria Musgrave. Samuel Crawley inherited Stockwood Park from his Uncle John in 1815 and was High Sheriff of Bedfordshire for the year 1817 - 18. These tureens were presumably commissioned for use in his new estate and for use during his impending elevated position. Samuel Crawley was in the vanguard of agricultural improvement and freely endowed churches in and around Luton. He served as a Member of Parliament for Honiton (1818 – 1826) and for Bedford (1832 – 1837 and 1838 – 1841). Maria Musgrave was the granddaughter of Sir Philip Musgrave, 6th Baronet who was the MP for Westmorland. More about these families can be found on Wikipedia.

We are proud to offer this stunning suite of sauce tureens and will be happy to provide further information on request.
