Scottish Provincial Marrow Scoop, Forres 1815

Sold
Marrow Scoop - Plain - Forres c.1815 by Patrick Riach - 219mm long - Ref: LA/3089
An extremely rare early example of Riach's work. The marks read - West Front of Elgin Cathedral, Thistle, Gothic letter ("R" or "K"), FOR. Riach was educated and apprenticed to Charles Fowler in Elgin (hence the Cathedral mark) and subsequently set up business in Forres (hence the "FOR" mark).
This particular marrow scoop would appear to be unique and is discussed/illustrated in "Provincial Silversmiths of Moray & Their Marks" by GP Moss. The marks are shown on page 103 and discussed in the text on page 99. The scoop was on loan to the Falconer Museum in Forres at the time the book was written and has subsequently been sold from a private collection.
