Phoenix Pierced Silver Mote Spoon, c.1735

Mote Spoon - Phoenix Pierced & Engraved - London circa 1735 by James Delas - 15cm long - RK/7330
This is a very Georgian silver mote spoon with a phoenix emblem to the bowl.
The spoon has a long tapering stem with mitre terminal that is diagnostic of the 1730's. The most unusual feature is the piercing to the bowl which together with appropriately engraved feathers and claws represents a phoenix - most likely a heraldic device belonging to the original owner. The motif appears on both sides of the bowl.
The bowl has a good, wide shank and the maker's mark has been struck twice and shows "JD" in script within a heart-shaped stamp for the maker James Delas. Additionally, the "AS" initials of the original owner are located to the heel of the spoon.
Mote spoons were used to clear dust specks from the surface of tea. These dust motes originated from the wooden chests that transported dry tea in the 18th century. The spike to the end of the handle was used for clearing out blocked teapot spouts.
A fantastic spoon in fine condition.
