Pair of Sauce Tureens - 2-handled oval with bead mounts and pedestal foot - London 1779/89 by John Wakelin & Wm. Taylor - 150mm high; 225mm long; 1454g weight. - Ref. No.: GK/9299
Two very fine Georgian sauce tureens by the important London firm of Wakelin & Taylor. These oval tureens are complete with original covers topped with cone finials and an optional pair of later sauce ladles. The tureens were made a decade apart but are identical in form. The classical urn shape on pedestal foot and the bead decoration were the in vogue styles for the period. The bodies and covers are all engraved with the same lions head erased crest supported by two snakes.
The makers were an important link in a dynasty of Royal silversmiths that began with George Wickes in the early 18th century and continues today in the guise of Garrards & Company. This partnership made some of the finest quality pieces of silver for the most wealthy aristocrats in the country.
