Norwich Silver Trefid Spoon, c.1675 Thomas Havers
£1,895.00
Table Spoon - Trefid - Norwich circa 1675 by Thomas Havers - 18.2cm long; 45g - DT/6491
This is an extremely rare silver trefid spoon made in Norwich by Thomas Havers.
Norwich-made silver rarely appears on the market and this spoon was made by one of the most prominent silversmiths of the city. This table spoon has a particularly attractive bulbous trefid terminal with two "ears". The reverse of the bowl has a raised ribbed rattail. The back of the terminal is engraved with an original presentation inscription "HP donum CD" (a gift from CD to HP).
From terminal to bowl, the marks read: crown, TH (over pellet), castle over lion, rose. Thomas Havers purchased his freedom in 1674 and had a workshop and retail outlet on the Market Place in Norwich. He later became an alderman (1700), sheriff (1701) and mayor in 1708.
This rare spoon is in fine, antique condition with a good patina
Provenance: Bought from a collection of silver spoons sold as lot 52 at Phillips in London on 27th June 1980 - see photograph showing catalogue entry..
