Irish S-Label with Crown Surmount, 1835

Sold
Item: Wine Label Description: 'B'; crest and crown surmount Hallmark: Dublin circa 1835 by Smith & Gamble Dimensions: 54mm high Ref. No.: WB/9855
A very rare Irish and important silver wine label. The label is in three sections; the lower section is a letter "B" (presumably for Brandy) in the typical style of Irish letter labels from the 1830's. Above the "B" is an octagonal plate engraved with a horse's head erased crest. The top of the label is in the form of a counts' coronet.
The condition is excellent and crisp - the two horizontal lines showing on the reverse side are merely the seams - not splits! The Dublin marks lack the date letter (as is often the case) and only the "G" of the maker's mark is visible.
This label is depicted in "Wine Labels..." by John Salter as figure 910. A label worthy of further research!
