Sorry, this item is out of stock.

We are offering a fabulous quality early Victorian silver goblet with the additional benefit of an original letter pertaining to the goblet and the engraved inscription. The goblet itself is of the highest quality and was made by one of the most innovative silversmiths working in London during the 1830's. It is a large, hefty cup with an impressive size and a capacity of 1 pint. It has a stunning applied vine and grapes band around the top and around the base and the interior is gilt.

The engraving on the body of the goblet reads:

Presented to Mr Richard Horn by a few parishioners of the Liberty of Saffron Hill, Hatton Garden & Ely Rents AS A TESTIMONY OF RESPECT for his useful services in parochial affairs”.

The accompanying letter is addressed to "Mr Horn, Hatton Garden" and asks Mr Horn to receive the cup "as a humble testimony for your zealous endeavours" and states that "fellow parishioners most willingly responded to our proposition...". The letter is dated June 12th, 1845 and bears three signatures.

The Liberty of Saffron Hill, Hatton Garden & Ely Rents is close to the City of London with its southern boundary as the street now called Holborn. It has its own page on Wikipedia at this link:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saffron_Hill,_Hatton_Garden,_Ely_Rents_and_Ely_Place . Richard Horn was presumably the curate in the liberty and the goblet gives plenty of scope for further researches.
