Rattle - Gilt; coral, bells and whistle - Birmingham 1812 by Cocks & Bettridge - 130mm long; 53g - Ref. No.: ES/1657

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is a beautiful example of a Regency period silver rattle with all over original gilding. The rattle was made by the Birmingham firm of Cocks & Bettridge and is decorated with their trade mark engraved diaper pattern and additional floral engraving. There is a single tier of 8 jangly bells - all original with some bruising (convincing evidence of enthusiastic shaking by a child!). One end is fitted with a full length original coral teether, which had the dual purpose of soothing aching gums and warding off evil spirits. The other end has a whistle that works and a retainer ring for hanging from a ribbon or chatelaine.

Most Georgian rattle have some condition issues, however this coral & bells has survived remarkably well and is in fine order throughout. It has a discreet set of hallmarks close to the teether and a makers mark to the underside of the whistle. This is a really nice piece!
