Caddy Spoon - Gilt 'Eagle's Wing'. Norie Collection - Birmingham 1816 by Matthew Linwood - 88mm long - Ref. No.: TG/7949

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

A superb example of the famous eagle's wing caddy spoon. This particular spoon has many desirable attributes; not least the important provenance of being from the John Norie Collection - author of "Caddy Spoons: An Illustrated Guide".  This particular spoon is illustrated in the book as plate 92b.

There are two distinct types of eagle's wing - the Joseph Willmore type and the Matthew Linwood type. This spoon is from the workshop of the latter and is immediately obvious with it's more rounded bowl, superior feather work and head. It is also larger in size than Willmore spoons. Linwood examples are the far rarer type and this spoon dates from the first year of known Linwood eagle wing production.

This example has the added bonus of being gilt giving the spoon an extra air of opulence. These spoons were made in two pieces and joined where the neck meets the bowl (often misinterpreted as a repair) the join on Linwood spoon's are more expertly executed and hidden - this spoon is no exception to that rule. .

The iconic eagle's wing is the symbol of the Society of Caddy Spoon Collectors and is probably the most famous novelty example. No serious collection of caddy spoons should be without one!
