Sugar Basket - Pedestal foot and gilt interior - London 1794 by William Abdy - 152mm long x 170mm high (with handle up) or 110mm high (to top of rim); 188 grams - UE/3568

This is a beautiful Georgian silver basket on shaped, pedestal foot with gilt interior. The navette shaped basket is beautifully decorated with a band of bright-cut engraving with alternating leaf and flower head motifs on a matted background. One side of the basket bears an attractive engraved crest and the "W" to the other side is embellished with scrolls and flourishes: both are set within a decorative, shield-shaped cartouche. The hinged, swing handle is appropriately marked and the full set of hallmarks are to the underside of the foot.

This fine basket would have originally been used for sweets or sugar, but nowadays could be used for all manner of purposes. It is in stunning condition with neither damage nor repair.
