A rare form of wine label with the name of a popular 18th century wine incised to the middle. This Lisbon label is stamped to the reverse with a maker's mark that appears to be "IP" for James Phipps. Phipps was an important early specialist at making labels and after his retirement was followed by the prolific partnership of Thomas Phipps & Edward Robinson.
