Eagle's Wing Caddy Spoon, 1816 by Linwood

Sold
Caddy Spoon - Eagle's Wing - Birmingham 1816 by Matthew Linwood - 86mm long - Ref. No.: AJ/9467
A fabulous example of the most well known of all caddy spoons. The spoon is in excellent condition with crisp texture to the feathers and a clear set of hallmarks.
There are two distinct types of eagle's wing - the Joseph Willmore type and the Matthew Linwood type. This spoon is from the workshop of the latter and is immediately obvious with it's more rounded bowl, superior feather work and head. It is also larger in size than Willmore spoons. Linwood examples are the far rarer type and this spoon dates from the first year of known Linwood eagle wing production.
The iconic eagle's wing is the symbol of the Society of Caddy Spoon Collectors and is probably the most famous novelty example. No serious collection of caddy spoons should be without one!
