Charles II Mug, 1682

Mug - Bellied with reeded collar & gilt interior - London 1682 by RP - 85mm high; 350ml capacity; 140g weight - Ref. No.: BU/9317
A rare example of a Charles II mug with lemon gilt interior. There are some signs of gilding to the reeding and around the base which suggest that the mug was once gilt all over. The front of the mug bears a dot prick engraved coat-of-arms which in the style it has been executed would appear to be contemporary to manufacture. For a 330 year old mug, the condition is excellent, (although there is a slight indenture to the interior caused by the reeded handle being pushed in) and the patina is fine. This is a good, honest and original Carolean mug.
The maker RP with star below is shown on page 128 of Jackson's (Pickford edition) 3rd entry from bottom. He was evidently a specialist in hollowware and a small tankard has been noted bearing his mark.
