Sweet Basket - Buckingham Palace - Birmingham 1850 by Nathaniel Mills - 150mm diameter; 110mm high; 91g weight - Ref. No.: HC/4294
A very rare combination of a basket and engraved "castle top" scene. The basket is in the typical form for the period and the maker with a profusion of foliate scrolls. The engraved scene shows the newly remodelled East Front of Buckingham Palace with passers by in period Victorian costume including top hats and crinoline dresses.
Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of the British monarch. Queen Victoria was the first monarch to reside in the new palace in 1837. By the late 1840's, Victoria and Albert found that the original building had become too small for court life and their growing family and so a new wing was added in 1850 and the East Front, shown in the engraved scene, became the public facade. The East Front appears differently to today's scene as the palace was again re-modelled in 1913 during the reign of King George V. More information and photographs of the east front can be seen on Wikipedia at this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckingham_Palace
