Cream Jug - Art Nouveau - London 1905 by Johnson, Walker & Tolhurst Ltd. (designed and made by Latino Movio) - 78mm high 70mm max. diameter; 119g weight - Ref. No.: OP/5819
A beautiful hand-made silver cream jug in superb condition and made by the very rarely found designer silversmith Latino Movio. The chased design of fruiting tendrils on a hammered background is reminiscent of the style produced by Gilbert Marks - but is a fraction of the price! The jug bears the hallmarks of the London retailers Johnson, Walker & Tolhurst Ltd.
Latino Movio was an assistant to the very highly regarded silversmith Gilbert Marks. According to John Culme in “The Directory of London Gold & Silversmiths 1838-1914: “Johnson, Walker & Tolhurst played an important role in sponsoring the working silversmiths Gilbert Marks and Latino Movio.” See page 262. And also “at any rate he (Gilbert Marks) already had two assistants helping him. In spite of the absence of documentary evidence which would permit the positive identification of these two co-workers it seems probable that one of them was Latino Movio whose work is in a style very similar to Mark’s. Furthermore it is struck with the marks of Johnson, Walker & Tolhurst or of Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater and dates from around 1905 so that its’ appearance seems to coincide with the cessation of Marks’s oeuvre and to represent an attempt by the retailers to continue a popular style in the absence of its’ foremost practitioner.”
