88 piece Old English Thread Pattern Canteen, Sheffield 1992 by Payne & Son

The Service

We are pleased to be offering an excellent quality, late 20th Century silver 12 place settings canteen in Old English Thread Pattern. The service provides for the standard seven pieces required for a three course dinner for 12 people, with the addition of four serving spoons.

All the spoons, forks and servers are hallmarked for Sheffield 1992 and marked with the sponsor’s mark of the top provincial silver retailers, Payne & Son of Oxford. The stainless steel blades of the knives are also engraved “Payne Oxford” and include the Aladdin’s lamp trademark of Roberts & Belk, the Sheffield cutlers who were the likely manufacturers.

Each piece in this canteen of cutlery has a good sturdy weight and feeling of high quality in the hand. This table service benefits from being in excellent condition with the bonus of bearing no personalised engravings. This is a very clean, satisfying service!

Old English Thread Pattern

The plain version of Old English Pattern was first introduced circa 1770, but by 1780 new variants with minimal decoration along the edges had been introduced. Thread pattern was one of the first and has continued to be a particular favourite due to its elegant, simple form.
