117-piece Silver Old English Pattern Canteen of Cutlery, London 1917 by Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Limited

The Service

We are pleased to be offering an early 20th century 12 place settings silver cutlery service in Old English Pattern with all pieces made by one of the top 20th century silver retailers – Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Limited of Regent Street London.

With its plain and stylish appearance, this is a beautifully elegant service that in addition to the standard dining pieces includes traditional oval bowled soup spoons, both tea and coffee spoons and an extensive selection of serving pieces including a large and satisfyingly hefty soup ladle, a 12” long basting spoon, a pair of useful sauce ladles, six table spoons, a stilton cheese scoop and plenty of others. The majority of pieces are hallmarked for London 1917, although a few are marked for nearby years and four coffee spoons are marked for 1932.

The silver handled knives that complement this set are hallmarked for Sheffield 1989 by Terry Shaverin and are fitted with stainless steel blades. Antique knives rarely survive in good condition and these modern replacements are the best alternative available.

Every piece in this service is free from personalised engravings and in original condition, i.e. with the patina of age and use (n.b. each piece has been cleaned and hand polished).

 Old English Pattern

Old English Pattern was first introduced circa 1770 and has always been a very favoured pattern due to its elegant and simple form. It has been produced continually to the present day with a resurgence of popularity in the early 20th Century.
