John Cory Trefid Spoon, 1704
Spoon - Trefid with Beaded Rattail - London 1704 by John Cory - 19.6cm long; 45g - NL/8638
This is an excellent example of an early 18th century trefid spoon. It is showing evolutionary signs of later spoons - i.e. an elongated bowl and less bulbous terminal. The spoon bears a very good set of Britannia Standard hallmarks with the distinctive John Cory maker's mark. A further bonus is the 1705 dated "EB" dot pricked baptismal initials to the reverse of the terminal. This spoon is in fine order throughout with a good unworn bowl (tiny ding) and lovely patina.
