Spoon - Dog Nose - Chester circa 1700 by Peter Pemberton - 196mm long; 50g - Ref. No.: HF/1488

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

An extremely rare silver dog nose spoon made in Chester by Peter Pemberton. The spoon is great condition and bears an original dated betrothal triangle to the reverse terminal: "T"/"RB"/"Sep 21"/"1702". It is unusual to have the exact date of the wedding. The spoon is marked thrice with the same makers mark.

Pemberton used a good number of different marks, and those on this spoon are very similar in outline to those shown in Jacksons and Ridgway with the distinctively shaped punch. According to Maurice Ridgway on page 149 of "Chester Goldsmiths from Early Times to 1726", little is known of Pemberton's work between 1697 and 1701, when the New Standard "Pe" maker's mark was introduced. This "PP" mark may well fill that gap.

As there were no other PP makers working in the UK around 1700, we are certain that this must be by Pemberton.
